Car market leader Maruti Suzuki India Limited sold a total of 98,884 units in May 2012 as compared to 104073 units in the corresponding period last year, thereby registering a drop of 5 pc in sales. This includes 9,406 units for export (10554). In the different segments, the best performer was the utility vehicles segment which got a boost with the launch of the Ertiga. The combined sales of the Gypsy, Grand Vitara and Ertiga stood at 7734 units in May 2012 as compared to 1100 units in May 2011. Segments that continued to be a disappointment include the mid-size with the SX4 where sales were limited to 405 units as compared to 2702 units last year in May. The Kizashi in the Executive segment continued to disappoint with a mere 12 units sales, as compared to 50 in May last year. The Mini segment with the M800, Alto, A Star and WagonR recorded sales of 29,895 units in May 2012 as compared to 42,125 units, a drop in 29pc. The Compact segment with Swift, Estilo and Ritz showed a 14.7pc increase with sales of 24,290 units as compared to 21,185 units.
